Challenge: Create a British Republic

Along the lines of a 1649 PoD: A Venetian privateer sails to England in hopes of finding fortune in the turmoil, captained by a dashing scion of an influential Venetian family, carrying a small group of Swiss mercenaries hopeful of employment by either side. They've missed their chance in England, but happen to connect with Robert Blake, who is gathering resources for his new tasks at sea. While organization is underway, the Venetian shares his understanding of how a maritime commercial republic works with influential members of the new Commonwealth through his new friend General at Sea Blake. The Swiss, back with them as private marines, share their knowledge of a country without aristocrats. Mixing with the rapidly changing social environment in England, these ideas are blended by a thoughtful leading Regicide to write a charter of government in which the franchise is allotted to men of substance and merit, which oddly enough seems to correspond initially with being sympathetic to the leading factions in Parliament, which then stands for a new election. Stability and continuity is achieved, the environment provides for commercial success insuring both the means and need for a strong navy. Cromwell is the strongest figure in the Council of State, Speaker for the Council which becomes the position of the head of government. The Venetians win glory for their new country, becoming wealthy and marrying into the upper echelons of the new elite. Parliament establishes the Philosophical Society, which attracts the leading minds of the realm and of Europe to London, providing for new methods of industry and finance. The British Isles enter a golden age, while their colonies in the new world thrive and enhance the position of the Commonwealth among nations.

I'm new here, are Puritan wanks old and tired?
