Challenge: Colonies of Latin American nations

This rarely comes up. The only fairly common one I've seen is the idea that Brazil could either inherit a Portuguese colony in Africa, or start a small one themselves during the Scramble. That and a map idea posted long ago in which Mexico has colonised New Guinea...but I digress.

Suggest some scenarios in which the nations of Latin America have overseas colonies by the year 1910, with a POD after 1810. I impose this stricture so they are recognisable Latin American countries, although you can have things like Grand Colombia or the United Provinces of Central America if that helps.

Chile did have some Pacific "colonies" depending on your definition, so if they expand their holdings a little, perhaps taking some of Polynesia would be reasonable with a TL similar to ours. With a radicallly different one even Hawaii isn't overstretching it......

Also, if Mexico keeps the OTL US Pacific coast, Hawaii is a likely conquest, and even the Phillipines if Mexico goes for Cuba for some reason.

If we assume its actually possible:eek:(I tend to think not), we could have Latin American colonies on Anartica's coast. I think some of Tony Jones TL's have that.

I'm tempted to think that, at a stretch, Argentina or a federation of nations based in OTL Argentina could have taken Namibia or even bought Cape Colony from the French, Portuguese or Dutch in a TL were they were looking to sell it.

If Portugal joins the Axis in World War II, maybe Brazil might try to grab Angola or Mozambique? (unlikely, I know)

If Argentina does a little better, maybe it can get a small piece of the African coast or some islands somewhere.

Brazil would seem to still have strong ties in Africa. They might very well fill some of the vacuums in places like Angola and Mozambique. Brazil also inherited a bit of a maritime tradition from Portugal. One example of this is the fact that many family names in Hawaii are inherited, not from Philipinos, but from sailors from Brazil who ended up sailing on Portuguese vessels.

You also have the Falklands/ Malvinas(?)

At the very least some of the smaller Pacific Islands could've been snatched up early on by adventurers who later lost thier claims to native governments.
If nothing else, these would be valueable coaling stations, which might assist commercial interests.

If nothing else, certainly the Galapago's, Eastern Island, and possibly Hawaii, would be an excellent coup to an up and coming world power, assuming it had a progressive government, with long term goals, rather than a need for an elite to enrich themselves at the expense of its citizens.

Antarctica would also be an interesting possibility, if South American nations, rightly or wrongly, take a greater part in the hunt of whales and other fishing interests.

Failure of a Panama Canal would also do wonders for said nations.

just a thought...

I don't think the Falklands count as a colony.

I don't think the Falklands count as a colony.

The United Kingdom considered it as sovereign territory. I assume that since its not in the North Sea, contiguous with England per say, and they were willing to go to war for it, that they were rather attached to it at a certain level. Call it what you will, its English dirt.

^Even though between the time that Argentina was independent and Britain invaded those islands in 1833 it was Argentine dirt?

I mean it wouldn't count as a colony in Argentine hands.
