Challenge: CND = more military equipment

In the twenties & thirties shocked by the apparent futility of the carnage of WW1, many people campaigned for 'Disarmament'. It had the effect of restricting the military budgets of the western democracies when they needed it.
Likewise, in Western Europe - CND shocked by the apparent futility of the potential carnage of nuclear war, campaigns against the military (no doubt aided and abetted by ......).

Hence the challenge - should you choose to accept it.
Have CND (or at least a sizeable faction) while still campaigning against nuclear weapons, advocates an increase by NATO countries in defence spending on conventional weapons. The theory being, that in any conflict, it will take longer for nuclear weapons to be used.
It will be interesting to see the various POD's people use. And what effect this will have on later actual conflicts - with the better equipment 'now' available.
Good luck

Sweden did that to some degree and spent the nuke money on the military, primarily on the airforce. But doing that in a country that already have nukes are different but Brittain brought most of their nukes from the US, right? So they might get support from the local military industrial complex wanting to keep the spending in country.

The 'challenge' is nothing to do with the UK military/industrial interests ie the 'establishment'. But to amending the anti-military stance of the Campaign for Nucleur Disarmament (CND). The example of Sweden is given - non-nucleur yes but with strong conventional forces.
Now this 'challenge' doesn't mean that the UK abandons its nucleur policy, only that the anti nucleur pressure group e.g. they may still have campaigned against Tomahawk and Pershing missiles, but would have advocated a stronger conventional counter-balance to the WP.

What would it take to change the 'rose tinted specatacles' of CND regarding the Soviet Union?

Must they be CND themselves, or a CND splinter group, or would consider an alternative, organisation, maybe billing themselves as 'pragmatic' anti-nuclear demonstrators or what have you, which could eclipse CND?

I'm just wondering how similar to CND you want the group to be

Splinter group? No problem - the original thread said CND ( or sizeable faction).

The US (if memory serves) were awakened to the 'dangers' of the Germans in WW1 by the Zimmerman telegram, could not a group of CND activists be unmasked by the discovery of their 'orders of infiltration' from their Soviet Commanders!?
Perhaps, at least this means that Labour politicians who in their youth supported CND don't look upon the Military Budget as something to cut!!
