Challenge: Chinese Conquest of Afghanistan

In the "Outer Mongolia" thread, there's a map showing Chinese land claims that include Afghanistan (!).

Leo said "good luck" in response to the possibility of the Chinese conquering and annexing Afghanistan. My response was if they really wanted to, they could simply kill off or expel troublesome populations and resettle their own surplus people there.

So now for an AH Challenge.

With a POD no earlier than 1900, have the Chinese invade and annex Afghanistan, then start exporting their own people there a la Tibet and Xinjiang.

HM, that's a tough one, one thing I think though, they'll have to take over more area to successfully take Afghanistan,
perhaps taking all of the Kashmir and most or all of modern Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Something like this;

I would say that the Chinese would first have to encircle Afghanistan first, so after Tajikistan, they should then hold Bukhara, from which they would have to consolidate Turkestan under their supremacy. From there, they can then go south to take Herat, which from where they would spread to the whole Afghanistan. Going for it immediately through just Tajikistan and Kashmir is... just impossible, because Tajikistan and Kashmir are just not there yet. From Kashmir the would then have to capture Khyber Pass before entering the country.

All this conquering Afghanistan bussiness will be a long process in the best case.

Hm I though I'd included enough area to do that originally, ah well, can't always be correct,e specially on that map. :p

I do wonder if ITTL China may well either take part of or be given Pakistan.

hmm, I think a good POD for this might be the Sino-Indian Border War in 1962: if China wins a more conclusive victory, maybe they could take the whole of Indian Kashmir rather than stopping after taking Aksai Chin.

Then, in the 1970s during the power struggle between the different wings of the Afghan Communist Party - perhaps a group with a more Maoist, pro-Chinese orientation takes over - China could intervene to prop up a pro-China communist government, and then slowly incorporate Afghanistan into China.

No Sino-Soviet split would make China allied with a country that did invade Afganistan. It seems like a good place to start...
