IOTL, the country of Spain was formed through dynastic union of Castile and Aragon. That doesn't seem to satisfy all of us. A common occurence in ATLs is that of a similar union of Castile and Portugal. Now, even that seems a bit clichéd to me, something like "The South wins the Civil War", though generally begging less rationalization. There was a lot of precedent of intermarriage among the Iberian rulers, after all.
So we have two pairings of the big three post-medieval Iberian states: Castile-Aragon and Portugal-Castile. The third, Aragon-Portugal, seems a bit more challenging to pull off, since its parties are noncontiguous. Thus, I'm putting you all up to it.
The challenge: Make a lasting Christian state in Iberia, generally known as "Spain", that persists alongside a separate Castile. I'm not putting on any particular POD limit, though I prefer that *Spain develop in a similar timeframe to Spain.
