Challenge: Best case for the WRE

As most of you will know Rome had a huge empire and eventually it splitted in 2 the Western and the Eastern Roman Empire.

Here´s a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Roman_Empire for information about the western Roman Empire. Your challenge is to let the WRE survive longer then the Eastern Roman Empire. These are the rules:

- Pod must be after 395 AD
- One of both Roman Empires must be Pagan the other must be Christian.
- No uber Wanks or a very small sucsessor state.
- Italy must be under their control

Have fun!!

All save the paganism are, IMO, actually fairly doable.

I'm not sure anyone ever fleshed out the consequences of a survival inspired by the reconquest of North Africa in the 5th century, though.

Might be possible if you moved the POD back a year to 394. Have either the western pagan forces win the Fridigis battle but be too weakened to conquer the east or say have Theodosius die before the battle. Without a direct threat from the east the west may stay defensive itself. [Or say after Theodosius’s death the east descends into civil war over the succession while pro-Christian uprisings in the west have to be put down]. This gives both sides something to distract them from trying to re-unify the empire. Then possibly external threats mean neither is able to commit strongly against each other.

Still think the situation would be unstable as the Christian east would be most unhappy accepting a continued pagan west so I think that would be the single biggest problem.
