Challenge: Benelux and Malelux

With a POD after 963, your challenge is to have, by the present day, a state called Benelux being bordered by a state called Malelux. The names of both states must be syllabic acryonyms, the '-lux' in both must refer to the County (or successor) of Luxemburg, which must be divided between both states, but the other two syllables may stand for whatever you want.

Finally, these states must have a long history of antagonism towards each other.

HAVE AT IT!

eh, Benelux means Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. Malelux would have to be a country consisting of three nations with the ma- the le- and the-lux in it. This is hard. Since lux in bothe refer to Luxembourg we just need to find the ma- and the le-.

MAssachusset ( state of )

LEman. ( Departement du )

Now for an alliance of the 3

Hm, LiEge maybe? Its a stretch to shorten it to -le-, but hey, at least its nearby...

as in LEuken, maybe...

MA could then be Malines/Mechelen.

It requires some change in the language pattern in what is OTL belgium, but that should be feasible.

The '-lux's still need to mean Luxemburg, but the 'Bene-' bit needn't mean 'Belgium and the Netherlands', if you think that will make it easier.

Also, with a POD far back enough, you can butterfly the way certain places are spelt.

Where does the name Malelux come from? It means something? Or just random?

Assuming it could develop...err....Mastricht, Leuven, Luxembourg? They decide to go off city names rather than provinces for its parts? Or maybe those cities are the corners of the nation.

For Malelux, how about:

MAastricht: Dutch and Belgian Limburg
LEuken: Liege
LUXembourg: Current state of Luxembourg

Benelux is the remainder of Belgium and the Netherlands, with Lux referring to Belgian Luxembourg.

Maybe Malelux is a German satellite formed during the 19th or 20th century, then Benelux unites to protect against further German aggression.
