Challange: Khanate of Russia

your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make the Grand Duchy of Muscovy become a Khanate instead of a Tsardom, but the transformation must happen at a similar time that it did OTL. good luck.

having a surviving Byzantine empire might do the trick -- the Russians only took the title of Czar (Caesar) and the eagle after the fall of Byzantium, because Muscovy saw themselves as the successor. if the Byzantines were still around the Grand Duke of Muscovy might look to the eastern Khanates as his inspiration, and their you go. either a Khan, or Grand / Great Khan of All the Russias

Well, following the death of the Khan-Emperor Batu VI in 1452 at the Battle of Khansfort (1456) Batu's second son, Hulegu, declared himself the Khan-Emperor at his capitol of Muscovy(The death of Batu VI is generally accepted by historians as the end of the Mongol Empire in Europe, and there after Hulegu's Muscovy state is called the Khanate of Russia). Emperor Henry II found Europe exhausted after the "Mongol Crusade," and was forced to seek a truce with Hulegu. Though the Khans of Russia continue to claim the titles "Khan of the Western Horde and Emperor of the Romans" since Hulegu's time the state had been known as the Khanate of Russia since 1456. When Khan Batu IX succeeded to the throne in 1518 he began using the title "Khan of Russia" instead of the traditional "Khan-Emperor."

Might this mean less emphasis on taking Constantinople from the OE?

How about making Russia Muslim or Jewish? This would give it less of a claim to being the successor of Byzantium.

Wait... didn't the Khan of Bulgaria (the European one) declare himself Tsar?

The Bulgarian leader decided that he wanted to become Byzantine emperor. They converted from Christianity and changed from Khans to Csars, somewhere in the late 9th or 10th century. They changed in order to be on an equal playing field with the Byzantines, where as the Russians were claiming that they were the new Caesars of the Third Rome, the Second Rome having fallen in 1453. I think that outside of other massive changes to European history, the only way to get a Khanate of Russia is to have the Russians convert to Islam, then get involved in Golden Horde politics and have a Russian prince declare himself "Khan" and conquer the rest of Russia, ala Muscovy.
