Challange: Cold War ends early?

Is it possible for the Cold war to end much earlier than in rl? Without the collapse of the Soviet Union? Khrushchev and his K-Thaw seems like the best bet, but i suppose Beria could do it if he really was a liberal.

So whats most plausible way to end the Cold War very early. And what would be the effect on the world?

Henry Wallace remains FDR's VP up until his death. He advocated peace with the Soviet Union, after the outbreak of the Cold War. If he becomes president, there's a potential for the Cold War never even happening.

Sorry i should have been more clear. Challenge is to stop the cold war AFTER it starts.

Hinckley's bullet kills Reagan and Bush Sr is president. Cold War starts to end right after the election in 84. Perhaps the Soviet Union survives.

Or Nixon has sense enough to rein in the Watergate burglars. Detente gets much more of a chance.

Then butterfly away the Kennedy Assasination. Its been suggested by conspiracy theoriests that one of the reasons why he was assasination was because he was planning on ending the Cold War.

How do you figure?
Hmm. Reagan was a hawk until Gorbachev, but buddied up when he saw someone he could work with in Gorbachev. I don't think Bush was a similar hawk and so therefore he may not kill the detente. That wouldn't necessarily be the end of the Cold war, however; just it's cooling.

Whacked-ass conspiracy theories aside, Kennedy did want to work towards a detente and cooling of tensions with the Soviets by 1963.

Sort of like saying the cold war ending with Nixon? I don't really buy it, some crisis will happen sooner or later and it will cool down. I figure it's not over until one of the players is out.

ONLY Way Kennedy was Going to End The Cold War, was by Making it go Hot ...

Here's My Suggestion; Nixon Wins in 1960 and Continues Eisenhower's Plans for Potemkin Divisions, which were Incapable of Fighting without Resorting to Nuclear Weapons ...

The Cold War Eventually Degenerates into Two Armies of Suicide Troopers Staring at Each Other Across The Inter-German Border; Ultimately Even these are Withdrawn as The World's Silence becomes Deafening!
