Challange: Biggest, Badest, Coolest Naval Battle: On a River or Lake

We have discussed naval matters before. However, most discussions focused on blue water navies. But what about riverine warfare. What are the largest, longest running and most interesting battles?

What else could be interesting?

There was a Napoleonic battle where hussars charged ships immobilized by ice - the one and only occasion, probably, where cavalry ever defeated a combat fleet.

Mimi and Toutou Go Forth.

You couldn't, even ASBs on acid couldn't, make up this story.

As some have already mentioned the Royal Navy expedition to Lake Tanganyika is well worthy of the title. To lead this task force the RN, for some inexplicable reason chose Geoffrey Spicer-Simpson who was known for being the oldest Lt. Commander in the RN, a man predisposed to wearing skirts, court martialled for wrecking his own ships and a complete liar.

This is the MV Liemba former Graf von Gotzen of that conflict.

It was armed with one of the guns taken from the SMS Konigsberg.

These were the events that the film The African Queen was based on.
