Nationalism was much fiercer, so that the new Empires never joined together and the old ones split apart? Every tiny polity of the former Holy Roman Empire has its own army, as do every African tribe, Moslem sect, and odds and ends such as Catalonia or Bretagne?

The military is organized differently throughout the world, and an "army" refers to a couple thousand people.

What armies are you talking about:confused:
Each country having a army or the catagory of a major military unit consisting of several corps?

If its the first one, then it already happened. Note the ancient times, thousands of tribes with a army in the tens:D

In reading about Alfred the Great I was a bit surprised about the number of armies that were about. The Viking Great Army was a muster of the reatiners etc of several Viking lords, and the Saxon forces were similar, the retainers of a number of great nobles, the Kings forces and the fyrd. And this is to get forces of about 4000 on each side, rather than any great numbers. So of battles of this small size can contain up to 10 'armies' I'd imagine that throughout the world 6000 isn't impossible.
