CH: Destroy American Football

Specifically, create a Watergate like event with it that utterly humiliates the entire sport to the level that it dies. Since I know very little about sports, there's a reason I posted this here for others to pick over.:p

Why this challenge? Because I'm curious on how American culture would be affected by the removal of what they view as its most popular sport.

Have a mass doping scandal come out, with even the head offices of the NFL secretly giving drugs out 'n stuff.

The NFL collapses, and football is basically seen as the "doping sport".

Can't see that happening, since it pretty much happened historical - access to drugs, not the NFL secretly giving it out. Also that might only be limited to major league football and not really be felt to extend to college and high school leagues.

Early advances in the study of the brain and brain injuries. That will be unfolding shortly and could change the game as we know it. More importantly the sport may fall out of favour and pre-teen, junior varsity and varsity leagues slowly dwindle because of safety concerns.

I suppose so. It would take a hit if a mass doping scandal happened in the NFL - once you've lost the NFL, you've lost a lot of inspiration for kids to play football and soon juvenile football would be a declining sport.

It almost was destroyed in 1905 when something like 18 players died. But they opted for massive rule changes and it survived.

It'll die in 1905-ish if the Ivy league colleges drop it. (Columbia had suspended it before the rule changes so that seems plausible). Perhaps rugby (which some colleges were playing, though I'm not sure which ones) gets popular instead.

Maybe... nothing?

Okay, look, sorry if I dream of a world where organized sports in a country dies a fiery death.:(:p

You cannot kill a sport that has grass roots support. It would rise again.

If you can commercialize a sport to the extent that it becomes soulless and it doesn't matter who wins and loses so long as the sponsors are happy then ordinary people may drift away over time and find something that is more relevant to their lives.

I am not sure if that is happening to American Football but I do know that every attempt to bring the sport to a mass global audience in the same way Association Football has succeeded in doing has failed.

Sept 9, 2001. 4 hijacked airliners are crashed into 4 stadiums in the middle of the early afternoon NFL games. Eight entire teams and hundreds of thousands of spectators are killed along with the passengers and crew.

Fiery enough for you?

Did my South Park reference go over everyone's head or was it just not funny to begin with?

Umm what? What exactly is going to replace it? Swear to god if you say soccer Im a shit my pants with laughter.

No, the NFL Anaxgoras's scenario isn't really going to come to fore. While there will likely be a lot of research coming out over the next several years on how playing sports fucks you up, we'll also being a lot of new medical advances coming online that will be able to treat those injures far better than we have at any point in the past.

Actually I was just thinking, if you really wanted to kill football the best place is when Roosevelt was President. Have the NCAA not form. Football dead before it started. Although I suspect it will be a regional game predominantly in the northeast and Midwest.

That might just end up meaning that a minor-league system will gradually take root, or that football goes down a European-style promotion/regulation path. (The NFL did kind of do this OTL in the 1930's)

Then destroy its grassroots support.
