OK, just been doin some IHL research on the International Review of the Red Cross website- incl the below articles:

http://www.icrc.org/Web/eng/siteeng0.nsf/htmlall/review-873-p35/$File/irrc-873-Bartels.pdf
http://www.icrc.org/Web/eng/siteeng0.nsf/htmlall/review-873-p69/$File/irrc-873-Vite.pdf

Now, WI the fundamental nature of IHL was changed under an alternate 1949 Geneva Conventions ? Say, if no difference was recognised between international & non-int'l armed conflict under the Geneva Conventions ? Or, alternatively, if somehow the Conventions recognised a difference in wartime between defensive & offensive ops (which IHL has always traditionally not made) ? Or, further, if a 3rd category of person was recognised as well as combatant & civilian ?
