*Warning: Spoilers*

Centurion is a 2010 film about survivors of the Ninth Legion which disappeared in Britannia in the 2nd Century. Quick review; decent film, some good action sequences, predictable plot, over-all a semi-historical action film that I wouldn't mind watching again if I was hung-over or drunk.

In the film the historic Ninth Legion is ambushed while marching though Scotland and wiped out. Later in the film the Roman Governor of Britannia decides to cover up the knowledge of the fate of the legion.

In reality the fate of the Ninth Legion is unknown. The Ninth disappeared from records while in Britannia around the time of the construction of Hadrian's wall. The reason for this is not recorded. It may have been destroyed be hostile tribes or disbanded voluntarily.

In the movie they say that if the Britain tribes knew a legion could be destroyed there would be widespread revolt. However, there could have been revolts if they knew that the tribe had been peacefully disbanded also.

Some high ranking officers of the Ninth are recorded after the estimated date of it's destruction (117 AD). This might prove that the Ninth wasn't destroyed, these people survived the legions devastating attacks somehow, or left the legion before it was destroyed. Also, the Ninth could have been destroyed after this date.

My question is; is the films depiction of the legions destruction true, or was the legion disbanded peacefully, or is the truth somewhere in the middle?
