Centurion (2010 Film) Question

*Warning: Spoilers*

Centurion is a 2010 film about survivors of the Ninth Legion which disappeared in Britannia in the 2nd Century. Quick review; decent film, some good action sequences, predictable plot, over-all a semi-historical action film that I wouldn't mind watching again if I was hung-over or drunk.

In the film the historic Ninth Legion is ambushed while marching though Scotland and wiped out. Later in the film the Roman Governor of Britannia decides to cover up the knowledge of the fate of the legion.

In reality the fate of the Ninth Legion is unknown. The Ninth disappeared from records while in Britannia around the time of the construction of Hadrian's wall. The reason for this is not recorded. It may have been destroyed be hostile tribes or disbanded voluntarily.

In the movie they say that if the Britain tribes knew a legion could be destroyed there would be widespread revolt. However, there could have been revolts if they knew that the tribe had been peacefully disbanded also.

Some high ranking officers of the Ninth are recorded after the estimated date of it's destruction (117 AD). This might prove that the Ninth wasn't destroyed, these people survived the legions devastating attacks somehow, or left the legion before it was destroyed. Also, the Ninth could have been destroyed after this date.

My question is; is the films depiction of the legions destruction true, or was the legion disbanded peacefully, or is the truth somewhere in the middle?

Not sure about this one.

The IX Legion was pretty badly chewed up in the Boadiccan rebellion back in 60AD with the cohorts almost completely wiped out with only the Commander and legionary cavalry able to fight their way out of the Iceni ambush.

It is beyond dispute that the IX was wiped out in a rebellion, the only question is where? In Brittania?, in Germania? or in Palestine?

All have been touted as possibilites.

most probable scenario is a mass desertion passed under silence not to appear weak on other (e.g. eastern) borders.
Garrison duty in half-starved wet-soaked illitterate lousy britannia was something alike to alaska-garrison in the 1920: no-one wanted to stay there and problems were common since from Vespasian's times at least

I was under the impression the Ninth Legion wasn't actually destroyed in Britannia and was eventually transferred to Dacia, where it was destroyed in the Dacian War.

(There was some new documents discovered or something like that. The whole "destroyed by the Picts" thing is an older theory.)
