Centralising the HRE

Just wondering, how would the Hosenaufen Dynasty centralise the HRE into a France like monarchy? I would perfer any time after 1175 and before 1250. I would just perfer modern day Germany and Austria in this, as Italy may be difficult to keep.

What difficulties would the HRE Empeors face in doing this? Could they succeed?

There are several threads on this in the distant past - I started one trying to pin down some specifics.

Any links to these? That would be helpful.:D As i can't find them.

Search for "centralization" "HRE" (or) "Holy Roman Empire""

I probably have links saved somewhere, but assuming the search engine is working, you can find them faster that way.

It would be really difficult the numerous states would not hesitate to take arm to protect their right and overthrow the emperor.

The Emperors could do it bit by bit.
If it was that easy. The citystates would opposse any attend to reduce their independence, the various religious states would call the Pope for help if their autonomy is threatened and I am not talking about the many princes and dukes that have no interest in a strong imperial throne. Looking at France and some other country I think they were lucky.

Do I have to bring up that picture comparing the royal demense of France to all of its various overmighty subjects? Because that goes a long way towards explaining that yes this kind of thing can happen.

Can you explain how it can happen then? It would be helpful.

Well to oversimplify the centralization of France it essentially relied on removing almost all ability of the nobility to raise their own armies and build their own fortifications, in France they where able to do this all at once but for the HRE its going to be a slower process as the emperor breaks the power of the weak counts and destroys some of the more entirely unnecessary fortifications and defenses. Its going to be slow but the emperor needs to make the nobles reliant on him for their positions and to instead adopt more bureaucratic systems. Again if you really want to know the full list of ways study up on the development of absolute monarchy in France.

It took around a century and a half (if we assume it started with Philip II) for the Capets to become dominant enough for the monarchy to "remove almost all ability to raise their own armies and build their own fortifications" - and even that left Aquitaine mostly undealt with.

Not sure why the HRE, assuming emperors just as able and lucky, would take substantially longer - its much the same situation.

It may take longer, I mean it is a significantly larger realm.

True, but it is also one where the majority of the nobility is busily dividing family lands amongst themselves into itty-bitty parcels.

"The nobility" may have a lot of power, but there aren't very many individuals after the Duchy of Saxony is chopped up who do, and it would be - relatively - easy to take advantage of it.
