Central America 1985 - Flashpoint?

I've often thought that Nicaragua/Honduras may have been a possible flashpoint between Soviets and US had the Soviets beefed up their presence in Nicaragua (bomber base. port facility for Navy) as well as increased aid and or military involvement with their proxies including Cuba.

Just a thought as I remember news reports from the period talking about the White House idea of using our pilots to fly Contras in helicopters into combat something eerily similar to what we were doing pre-1964 Vietnam.

If we're talking about bomber bases, the United States would undoubtedly take action to prevent a major Soviet presence in the area, up to and including blockading Nicaragua. That said, not sure if the USSR in 1985 would be up for this, since they were trying to ease tensions and whatnot.
