Catholic Ethiopia?

Would it be possible for Portuguese envoys to convert the Ethiopian monarchy to Catholicism in the 16th Century?

You would have to occupy the Ottomans with something not to intervene at all. Beside Austria Portugal was probably the most hated european nation for the Porte in early 16 century. Dislodging them from the spice trade and Indian ocean should not be a priority for them in this case.

Rome could simply find a way to reconcile miaphysites to the Universal Church. The issue is the Council of Chalcedon and not the validity of orders.

Remember, there are twenty-one rites and traditions under the political control of Rome other than Roman Catholicism. "Catholicism" is not just the Roman Rite.

The Pope is the political head of the Universal Church, but he is the patriarch of the Roman Rite only. In other words, he can only make liturgical and clerical decisions (i.e. the appointment of prelates) for Roman Catholics. His moral and doctrinal teachings are binding on all churches in union with Rome, however.

Yup- for a look at how Catholics tended to deal with Miaphysites, just look at what they did in Kerala. Gutted the church there so badly that even when most of the Syrian Christians broke away from the Catholic church they'd lost their Miaphysite heritage

Are we speaking just the monarchy, or also of converting the elite, the peasantry, or everyone? And also, what percentage would have to be converted to count?
I suppose if the Portugese offered enough or threatened enough the monarchy might convert- but of course, I am nowhere near proficient, let alone an expert at this era of history in this region...
