With as weak of a ruler as Andronicus is, he can't control them. Nor can Andronicus stop the Ottomans from taking Bithynia, nor keep the Akritai a viable force.

You make a good point. While liberating Constantinople was important for Byzantine prestige, it was bad for Nicaea to do. They should have focused their energy on Anatolia. As it was, Epirus got close to taking Constantinople. Had Epirus taken the city, the fall of the Byzantines could very well be to a Balkan power.
