Casemate M4 Sherman tank destroyer

There was no spare room in an M3. The Cheiftain did a 3 part video on the Grant and the gunners and loaders position for the 75mm was incredibly cramped because of the turret basket for the 37mm.
What tomo said - get rid of the 37mm turret (and 2/33 crewmen) and you gain lots of space ...

Given that US tank destroyer doctrine called for them to be a reactive defensive force and TDs were not meant for offensive tactics then what do we expect these vehicles do

Pretty much the same thing this did

shoot lots of HE indirect, and occasional AP at Nazi Infantry and Armor, like the other GMCs

I was thinking more of a combination of the Jumbo and M10. AKA an American STuG.

Here’s an off-the-wall idea:

What if Major Alfred Becker got a hold of a few captured M4s and converted them?

No 5" guns, please. You don't need the range of a naval gun in a TD or assault gun, when you need that kind of range the vehicle has gone from assault gun/TD to an SPG for the artillery. Either flavor of 5" is going to be very heavy, and there is no advantage in a TD to using fixed or semi fixed ammo. Both types are large and cumbersome in a tight environment, and good luck with getting the Navy to part with some. What we are looking for is something like the US T25 AT, Casemate TD which could have taken some type of 3" gun or a 105 Howitzer. Make it as simple as possible, give it to the infantry to replace or complement towed ATG's, and use it as an assault gun.
