Carter Assassination Attempt

How plausible is the existence of the Carter Assassination attempt (see Raymond Lee Harvey)?

If it really was an actual attempt, could it have worked?

The supposed assassination weapon seems to have been a shotgun, which is a step above the usual handgun.

Can you actually assasinate someone from a hotel room with a shotgun?
I know damn all about firearms, but I thought those things have a rather limited range.

When you were talking about the assassination attempt I thought that you meant the rabbit at first. :p

I'll have you know, that rabbit was pro-Castro, a former member of the Manson Family and had a thing for Jody Foster.

Don't let the fact that it's a rabbit fool you, my friend!

:D

Well assuming that the actual assassins had rifles and not shotguns, and that Raymond Lee Harvey was able to fire off his starter pistol, I suppose the assassination of Carter is certainly plausible. Say hello to President Mondale!

I wonder how Mondale would've handled the Iranian Hostage Crisis...

Would Ted Kennedy still try to gain the Democratic nomination in 1980?

No. Mondale would probably win in '80 and might evacuate the embassy before it's stormed.

People tried for Ford twice, so it's not too weird to think Carter might get killed. Would this affect the Sadat/Begin talks? Carter got some serious cred when he took Sadat and Begin to Gettysburg to break their wills. It worked. Gettysburg is depressing, it will break the will of anyone.

Interfere with this and the Democrats have no foreign policy success stories.

Maybe Mondale would have evacuated the embassy in Iran before the hostage crisis, but even this would have been seen as a repeat of Saigon. Reagan would still have won and Mondale would have done even less well in the South than Carter did.

And Carter only carried his home state of Georgia. :p

Nobody thinks the American people would rally around the President after the first one is assassinated? I certainly imagine the political actions taken are a lot different.

Kennedy doesn't run in the primaries, out of respect for party unity after the national tragedy, thus not weaking Mondale.

Reagan may not even win the Republican nomination. Him winning over Bush in New Hampshire really tied into Nashua debate debacle. With a Carter assassination, this event very well may be butterflied away.

I think Mondale could win, although it would be close.

Who would be Mondale's running mate?

EDIT: Lloyd Bentsen would make an interesting pick.

Actually - Georgia, Minnesota, West Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island and DC.

And, as usualy, the Electoral College results does not represent the real election - 50% - 41% - 6%, closer than the map would appear
