Carl Adolf, Duke of Värmland survives

Only legitimate son of Charles XIII of Sweden, he was born in 1798 and died six days later, his death meant his father had no legitimate issue, and thus was forced to adopt two sons, the second of whom started the House of Bernadotte in Sweden. However, what if Carl Adolf survives, and lives passed his father and becomes King in 1818 aged 20. Would he exercise as much authority as Carl John did otl, as Crown Prince? Would he be forced into a constitutional role? Who might he marry?

Probably Carl XIV Adolf would be enforced to some kind of constitutional monarchy altough he might keep much authority too. But this too depends whan kind of personality him has and if someone wants write such TL he can just use his own imagination.

Intresting question is whom he would marry.

Hmm very true, I do think seeing him being a forceful personality and needing to keep the peace between the pro French and the Pro british factions in court would be good.

Hmm, as to whom he could marry a German Princess, or perhaps a Danish one seems likely no?

Hmm how about Princess Charlotte of Prussia or her sister a surviving Princess Frederica of Prussia?

Maybe, but Bernadotte OTL considered only four possible matches for Oscar I (one of whom would be removed TTL because of her Beauharnais blood and Catholicism). The first was a Danish princess (Vilhelmina Marie OTL, but possibly Caroline here (10 years is a long time to wait, while Caroline would only be 4 years older)); the second OTL was Josephine de Beauharnais of Leuchtenberg (here, unlikely to be considered); third was Princess Marie of Hesse-Kassel (OTL duchess Bernhard II of Saxe-Meiningen) and finally, Marie of Weimar, granddaughter/niece of the Russian Emperor.

Now, if we're going towards Denmark, without going Danish, Marie of Hesse-Kassel is a good choice. Her paternal grandmother's a Danish princess, her mother is a Prussian princess. If we're going against Denmark, then Marie seems like a better option: her dad is related to the rulers of Prussia, Brunswick, England, etc, while her mom is related to several other players on the German scene. Plus there's the fact that neither of her parents (nor her maternal grandmother) wanted her to marry her OTL husband, since they were hoping that she'd marry an heir to the throne (and to this end, her mother tried to get Elisa Radziwillowna acceptable as Wilhelm I's morganatic bride, so that Karl of Prussia and his kids would have a better chance of inheriting the throne). So, that said, they might pull some strings to make sure she ends up as queen of Sweden rather than a mere Prussian princess of the blood. (Another thing that doesn't hurt is her paternal grandmother's familial connections to the late Swedish queen, Friederike of Baden, so she might have an in there; although Marie would have a similar in since her paternal grandmother is the sister of Dowager Queen Sofia who's in Stockholm, as opposed to Friederike who's not)

Okay interesting, so the options are Marie of Hesse Kassel or Marie of Weimar, but Hesse Kassel's great aunt is near the future King of Sweden, and thus perhaps more likely to convince him and his father of the benefits of such a marriage, correct?
