Captain America without World War II

hey, all. to be clear right off the bat, this ISN'T a question of what would happen to Steve Rogers the character without World War II taking place--it's about Captain America as a fictional character with the same question.

so for my ASB ATL, i decided that the Nazis don't come to power and, as a result, World War II as we know it doesn't take place. since Captain America as a character was originally conceived as anti-Nazi propaganda (and has since evolved away from that), i wanted to try to figure out if he would even exist as a fictional character ITTL. any help on this?

Nope. Captain America was created specifically for the looming threat of Nazism. Take away that, and he simply isn't created.

The only way to have Captain America without WWII is to have the US not ENTER World War II. He then stays as a spy-smasher in America fighting Nazi spies, but never becomes associated with the actual war itself. How the character develops or even revives then depends on how the world changes as a result of the US not entering the war.

As Mr. E says, if there is no WWII, Simon & Kirby likely never creates such a patriotic character as there is no war scare to create a popular market for one.

Japan and the USA were heading for some sort of crunch. How good would Captain America be in taking on inscrutable Orientals? ;)

Considering the cover of the first Captain America issue showed him punching Hitler in the jaw, it's easy to say that without WWII Captain America is never born

The USSR is still around? Perhaps the Cap could just switch the enemies.
The thing is, Nazi antisemitism was the major element that offended his (Jewish) creators, and prompted them to create Cap. There aren't many Jews in Imperial Japan, and the Soviet was less antisemitic in those days.

that's the other part of why i was asked ;) while there is a war in about the same period as World War II for the project, it's not against anyone at all comparable to the Nazis

Okay. Maybe the thread would be better called "Captain America without Nazis"

In that case, maybe not Cap specifically, but a patriotic character could arise who resembles Cap. After all, there were several characters similar to Cap, like the Shield, from the company which would become Archie.

i think probably several would fill that role, but Shield is a good point: he's definitely more patriotic-looking, at least, than the guy i'd written in after confirming Cap wouldn't exist (DC Comics' Spy Smasher)

while we're on the subject, any ideas for an OTL Marvel character that could/would fill in for Cap as an Avenger, if any?

Namor the Submariner and the original Human Torch could work as Avengers

certainly interesting. Namor taking Cap's spot, if not his role, maybe with someone like Iron Man as the leader?
