Still it would be really cool to be able to get on a sleeper train in Cairo and see all of Africa before getting off in Cape Town and flying home.
You wouldn't be able to do that anyway. The Egyptian rail system was standard gauge until it got to upper Egypt, when it changed to colonial 3'6". Then it stopped at Aswan and you had to take a ferry to the Sudan, where you reboarded. The Uganda/East Africa system was built with meter gauge, so you'd have to transfer again, pass through German territory (the area arranged with the Congo was virtually impassible) and then transfer again to 3'6" to get to Cape Town. It would probably be nearly as fast to take a ship, probably a lot cheaper, and way, way, way, way, way more comfortable. Imagine a lot of heat, humidity, insects, and food poisoning.
