Canadian WI: Prime Minister Claude Wagner

IOTL he ran for the PC leadership in '76 and lost. Let's say that Mulroney throws his delegates behind Wagner, and the other candidates do as well to make Wagner the ABC candidate. On the 3rd ballot, Claude Wagner, the former Quebec Liberal Minister of Justice under Robert Bourassa, is leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. Will he get a majority against Trudeau in 1979? How do Canadian politics turn out from here?

Well Wagner died in 1979 about a month after the 79 election. I'm not sure he would have contested the election or remainded leader after the cancer was diagnosed. Of course if he was selected leader and then stepped down prior to the election it may have given Mulroney another kick at the can.

Mulroney would have to run, and whether he could win Manicougan in 1979 is debatable. Clark would still win a strong minority or tiny majority for OTL reasons.
