Canadian Peerage?

As for eligible French lines, there are several very old French Hereditary peerages in Quebec. They still last today.

It might be worth looking at one of those to marry our king.

After reading over the link provided by Indefatigable here. (I am very happy by the way), The idea of creating a Canadian Peerage to go along with the Royal family is now interesting me. Could I be able to create a proper Canadian Peerage and Aristocracy in the mid 1800s? Of both French and English Canadians? As the lines and tradition of Canadian peers has already been established?

EDIT: This is for my Maple Leaf Forever TL

That's Viscount of Calgary to you! :D

Also, there were Canadian peers created in the British Empires, but starting from the 1920s, no more will be created save for Canadians who move to Britain, like Lord Black.

you could, in theory, have a sort of peerage created after the stature of westminster that is linked to the monarch as king/queen of canada and so be a separate, strictly honourary system from the british one. A list of nominees would be sent on the advice of the prime minister and approved by the monarch. It could take the place of the order of canada.

There weren't English peers, but there were French ones.

There were a fair few numbers of officer that were elevated after their tenure to the peerage but only 3 were linked directly to an appanage in New france:

- Barony of Cap-tourmente (under the Caen family)
- Barony of Portneuf (under the Robinau de Bécancourt family)
- Barony of Longueuil (under the Lemoyne family)

the first 2 became extinct and the 3rd continued via marriage of the last french baroness to an english officer.

There were a few more then that, though most went extinct fairly early on.

And Prime Minister, If we are looking at having Canadian peerages, then we must also consider having a house of Lords as opposed to a Senate.

But the Senate is already established at this point. Unless I just merge the idea of the two.

Yeah, It would be easy for the king to start giving senators life peerages upon their appointment. Much the same way PM's were given knighthoods. Any hereditary peers existing, or to be created could also enter the house.

Also, what about Governors General receiving a title upon appointment?

As I specified, the 3 baronies are the only apanage *linked* with New France. Other officers either had an "upgrade" of their rank or had an apanage in france.

I understand what you mean now. Thanks.

I like the first idea and I will toy with it for a while before coming up with something solid. As for the second, there are no Governors General, just a Monarch, like in the UK.

Having senators appointed at an old age for a limited time with some dying in office or giving them life peerage would be pretty much the same dynamic. Starting an hereditary peerage at a time when democratic ideals were on the rise might send a bad message though. Theirs also the chance that the scion of one might not be "the right sort".

Even OTL the British crown was giving our life peerages in Canada until the Nickel resolution. I don't think that careful consideration and appointment of heriditary peerages and other titles would be that damaging. Especially if it were started early.

but (and I might have misunderstood pm's project), this would be the peerage for a *new* kingdom, the kingdom of Canada, so that it wouldn't be continuing an old tradition but beginning one so that some might interject that as long as we're starting anew, might as well do so with a blank slate.
