Canadian America

I have seen a number of "American Canada" scenarios, mostly concentrating on 1812 or WW1. Is a Canadian America even remotely plausible by any standards? Post 1900 POD is ok, if you can think of one.

Even a decisive Canadian victory in the War of 1812 doesn't give a Canadian America. Some border adjustments in northern/eastern Maine, northern New York state, the Niagara peninsula and some portion of the Northwest could be taken, but that's the absolute maximum.

For a decisive control of the whole of the Northwest you'd have to change the course of the American Revolution (a victory at Saratoga might weaken the American position in the west) and for Britain to have a far better hand in alternate Jay Treaty.

My personal theory is that a Canadian America isn't possible. So much of the Canadian identity is tied up with the loyalist migration as well as the French-English divide that if alt Canada controls too much American territory from the start it ceases to become what we would call Canada.

Canada could absorb California and have its population more than doubled, so Canada really couldn't be much larger and be recognizable. With it having all of the US, it would probably be more like the US than OTL Canada.

There's a TL by Dathi which is an attempt at a Canadawank. It's a leeetle stretching things in places, but quite workable and it has a very big Canada.

That's assuming a Canadian California would even manage to get to 30,000,000 people, there's a good chance it has significantly less.

The most plausible ideas are either 1) New France-on-steroids, where France really commits itself to sending settlers to North America and so comes to actually control all the land that it theoretically laid claim to (which was a very large portion of the continent) or 2) British victory in the American Revolution, and that for whatever reason the name "Canada" gets applied to all of British North America.

Post-1867 (when the Canadian Confederation was formed), it's pretty much impossible.
