Canada takes US

Hm, well, a weaker than OTL US is a necessity. How about the Southern states not coming along in the AWI, then a later crisis separates the New England Confederation, which joins a nascent Canada? Follow that up with cunning diplomatic and economic pressure/incentives and you could see the few states remaining in the USA peeled off one by one.

So a United States sandwiched between Loyalist states, not given any room to expand, is eventually reabsorbed into the two countries? Hmm, interesting... instead of just one British-North-America identity we could have a Canadian/Northern and a Georgian/Caribbean.

I doubt it, since at the various points it could have happened it's more likely Canada would become a province of a British North America Confederation or the like.

Earlier in history (before the SYW) perhaps if the Hugenots had been allowed to settle Canada, and Canada becomes a much larger Protestant French colony (with Acadia remaining Catholic?) I could see the British colonies of NA being annexed if Britain does really poorly, or if, say, Charles II decides to relocate to his one remaining loyal territory, Virginia, in the 1650's and the Republic never falls.

Actually, that would make a good timeline....

I considered during a Trent War TL a naval Captain assigned to the NY blockade finds that the city is effectively unguarded and decides to go for the prizes in the harbor, but this show of force brings about the long threatened NYC declaration of independence (as Tri-insula) and a request to become a British protectorate (link).

There is no real plausible way, the population difference is too extreme. It would be like a time line where Belgium absorbed Germany.

If the US fragments, a possible result after a successful CSA, then Canada could absorb some of the former US, but not all of it. A more powerful Britain-backed Canada would be more successful, but it would be absorbing bits for Britain, not for Canada.

Even then, I'd expect some of the pieces to be absorbed by Mexico or remain independant.

The American Revolution never gets off the ground and the 13 colonies remain British. Canada and the Colonies join together into the Empire of North America also called Canada and Colombia dependeding whether one is in former Canada or in the 13 Colonies. During the Napoleonic Wars, Louisiana is taken by the Empire and absorbed. Then comes the slavery debates. In the meantime Texas declares independence from Mexico and recieves covert aid from the Empire. Texas than becomes a British Protectorate. The Mexicans are furiorious that the Empire helped the Texans and war breaks out. The Empire is victorious and it annexes what is in OTL the Mexican Cession and the Northern States of Mexico. However at this time the slavery debate increaes and the British attempt to outlaw slavery in the Empire of North America. The South declares Independence and war breaks out. The South calls themselves the United States of America, inspired by Thomas Paine. The war drags on for a couple of years before the South is crushed and absorbed back into the Empire. Thus "Canada" absorbed the United States of America.
