Canada stays out of WWI

After reading through an old book of mine I cam across something that I never knew, and after checking it out it appears to be true. In 1914, over 30,000 Canadians joined the army forming the 1st Canadian Division. About 70%, or 21,000 of these men were British immigrants. So in reality only 9,000 native born Canadians joined up. Of course later on more and more men joined up, but going on just the initial figures is it possible that Canada did not want to go to war in 1914?

WI Canada decided not to join the British in Europe? While I am still seeking out if these facts are true, I am wondering if this is signs of reluctance to join in the war that was to only last three months.

How recent british immigrants? At that point pretty a pretty big chunk of the population had come from britain at some point.

Canada felt itself British dominion at this point and could not ignore calls from Mother Britain. Quebec stayed out of the war at this stage, pretty much.

Did they even (de jure) have a choice? Wasn't declaration of war still a power reserved to the sovereign at this point?

De facto of course I guess there wouldn't be much anyone could do if the Canadian government refused to send troops.

I honestly don't think Canada had much of a choice at the time. Up until I would say Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Canada was still very much British. Canada staying out of WWI was pretty much out of the question... World War II, maybe...but a lot of things would have to have gone wrong in Canada for that to happen...

That reminds me of a TL I was going to do...
