Canaanites defeat Hebrews

And wasn't there a female counterpart to Yahweh somewhere at this time?

Yes, she was named Asherah, though when the Bible was revised to fit in with the development of monotheism she was referred to as the Asherah to try to disguise the fact that she was a goddess.

Well, what happens next is the unleashing of 747-sized butterflies. No Judeaism = no Christianity = no Islam. There's no certainty even if or when a proselytic monotheism will emerge. This is one of the most wide-open POD's possible to have.

Historical evidence indicates that Judaism arose as a reaction to Canaanite culture *within* Canaan so if this happens then there's no Jews, only Canaanites. This in turn means that the entirety of the Abrahamic religions never happen.

So the story about them originating in Mesopotamia is just a myth?
"Just" and totally inexistant, i wouldn't be THAT sure.

I'm not really knwoledgable about that, but i think it's possible that it retraces the remembrance of semitic migrations the long of Mesopotamia and Mediterranean coast. After all, it's the traditional way of expensions of Middle-East empire, so maybe it could be the same following for people.

But yeah, when Canaanites are identified as a people, pre-Yawhists are part of it.
