Can the internal combustion engine see earlier widespread use?

    Or specifically, what are the advancements needed (such as in metallurgy) to make it worthwhile the effort for the time?

    EDIT: the time period can start from the last years of the 18th century, where prototypes are being made.

    People are gonna want to know what time period you're talking about for earlier widespread use methinks.

    Its quite numerous early renditions I talk about are made in the last years of the 18th century and early 19th century, leading me to wonder if they could be used in place of the larger contraptions of the time, and the succeeding decades.
