Can the French Revolution end without Napoleon?

And general Dumas?
OTL, he could take command of army against the royalist uprising in 1795 before Bonaparte, but he had an accident and arrives late. He is as good strategist, I think, than Napoleon, and also a republican.

Idea: Napoleon Bonaparte dies at the end of the siege of Toulon.
In 1795, Dumas beats the royalist uprising.
Thereafter, he takes command of the Army of Italy, and puts an end to the First Coalition.
In 1799, he helps Sieyès for his coup d' état against the Directory and the instauration of the Consulate.
The Republic is saved.

If Marquis De Lafiaette had not been trown into prison when he arrived back from America, maybe he could have beed a counter-weight to Robiespierre.

But I think Robiespierre needs to meet an early end for the republic to have a chance.

Oh and not beheading Louis XVI would have been helpful.

Dumas as a Cincinnatus who helps save the republic with Sieyès would be awesome... Plus it might avoid his rather sad death (stomach cancer after multiple poisoning attempts while the french government basically gave him up for dead while he was imprisoned in Sicily).

The Marquis de La Fayette was never trown in prison when he came back from America. He was acclaimed as a hero and he became the darling of Versailles and Paris. He became the "Le héros des deux mondes", "the hero of the two world".

He was one of the main actors at the beginning of the Revolution but he lost quickly any support...

It was the Austrians and the Prussians who kept him 5 years in prison as a POW's between 1792 and 1797. He was captured when he leave his army because accusations of treason where made against him in Paris and he feared for his life. He tried to negociate his exile in a neutral country but the Coalises prefer to kept him in a muddy dungeon...

maybe he could have beed a counter-weight to Robiespierre.

A lot of brilliant politicians could be couter-weight to Roberpierre, but the Revolution was the fighting of different factions and the losers emigrated or were beheated...

But I think Robiespierre needs to meet an early end for the republic to have a chance.

The Republic was still alive and very well in 1804 when Napoelon asked the Senate for the title of Emperor. The Consulate was a Republic where three consuls had the main power. The First Consul being Napoleon and he asked to nominated Consul for life. These changes were all voted by the population...

The beheading of Louis XVI was voted in the National Assembly by only one vote. Probably if he was more careful and not took bad advices from his wife and some councillors, the Revolution will end in 1789, the Republic will not exist and France will become a modern country with a Constitutional Monarchy...

I wrote an essay last night, one third of which was on Napoleon... It can be read at

http://www.alternate-history-fiction.com/blog

I'm not putting it here just to span the thread, but because IMHO it addresses how Napoleon came to have the opportunity.

Hence, IMHO again, someone with the same mixture of opportunities could have succeeded - I wrote a timeline where that person is Joubet, but maybe it could have been Kleber...

Best Regards

Yes. And then Napoleon and his brother changed the votes.
