Can the First French Republic stabilise (and stay a republic)?

If the 18 Brumaire coup doesn't happen, or if it does but Napoleon dies before making himself emperor, do you think France would keep going through these cycles of various factions toppling one another every few years until one strongman finally took the power in his own hands, or could the French state stabilise under a republican government, meaning one where power is peacefully obtained (and relinquished) through an election (it doesn't have to be democratic or especially liberal, though)?

No.

The french 1st republic was established by violent action from minoritary groups. And once established, it excluded from power and legal political action those who had once been in the governing "coalition" in a movement that made its political base narrower.

It was not a consitution abiding regime. That is one of the reasons why France may well be the country in the world that had the biggest number of constitutions. Since 1789, it had 15 different constitutions.

No. Matteo pretty much summarized my sentiments exactly. France didn't even have a large consensus for the Third Republic, despite it lasting the longest since the Ancièn Regime. In fact, Republicanism probably benefited more from the stupidity of the French Right from tripping over itself and throwing away power over the most trival issues like the Comte of Chambord refusing the Tricolor when he had a solid majority ready to restore him.
