In the 1980s the Reagan Administration fostered the takeover of the GOP, and later generational hegemony in the US political system, by the combo of radical neoliberlism and the religious right. Although such a rise had manifold deeper sociopolitical causes to happen, it may be hypothesized that the Reagan Administration gave the movement critical momentum.

Now, we have two missed Presidential assassinations (Ford and Reagan) that in different ways could have prevented the Reagan Admnistration from playing such a pivotal role (the latter for obvious reasons, the former by butterflying away the Carter and Reagan victories) and hence resulting in a rather more contained influence of the radical right in the 1980s-2000s US political system. Could it be done ? Which assassination would work best for this outcome ?

Note: as far as famous assassinations go, it is also quite possible that keeping MLK, Malcom X, and/or RFK could have produced a similar resut. That, however, is a different issue.
