Can Post-2nd War Carthage be peacefully made Roman Province instead of being bullied?

Is this within the realm of possibility? Carthage is an incredibly rich region, and as I understand it, after the war they were pretty diffident to the romans until they got unfairly bullied. They were also very rich, so that would make them appealing?

If anything, could I get a fair explanation of why this is not possible? If it isn't possible?

I could see an end result for the Second Punic War that could end up with Rome totally destroying Carthage. Some members of the Senate especially Cato the Elder were all up for Rome totally destroying Carthage. Maybe somehow have that faction win out and Rome decides to destroy Carthage as a power once and for all firmly absorbing them into Rome as a province.

I would say no after the First Punic War well there's no much you can do without some serious imagination, but that would more than likely stretch plausibility.

It would be very difficult to convince Carthage to abandon it's autonomy without force. Probably ASB. Either they're too powerful to consider it or must be weakened and bullied into submission.

Otherwise what incentive does Carthage have to give anything up to the Romans? They're a strong power in their own right, one with a long history of independence and regional hegemony in the Western Mediterranean.

There's maybe a very slim chance of Carthage being incorporated into Rome without the city's destruction if things go badly in the Mercenary War. Carthage appeals to Rome to save it from being destroyed by the rogue mercenaries and exchanges its independence for security.

And this would result in the city regaining its wealth from within Roman security?

Possibly, but it seems mildly improbable that post First Punic War Carthage wouldn't understand the risks in reaching out to Rome for assistance. Simply compromising with the "Mercenary" leadership seems easier.
