Can a France without demographic decline keep the Maghreb?


Interesting that about as many Italians went to Egypt as Algeria. I was unaware of Italian immigration there.
 
Alexandria in particular was a major destination. In 2004, over at my blog I reviewed a book, Alexandria: City of Memory, that describes how that Mediterranean port city became a particular focus for immigration from across the Mediterranean. The whole city ended up coming apart under the pressures of decolonization and the formation of nation-states, sadly.
