Calling In 007-An Alternate History of The James Bond Movie Franchise

Episode II
From Russia With Love

The poster for From Russia With Love(1), being the final one that features a minimalist art, before To Live And Let Die returned the whole minimalist artstyle on the UK posters(2).

Yet those very ads are the thing that made Broccoli, Fleming and Saltzman the victorious party once more. Released on 1st October 1963, despite the tragedy that surrounds the movie's production following Pedro Amendariz's on-shooting sudden death(3), with the movie itself being Pedro's epitaph and final movie. Being a "revolutionary" Bond movie, that features Lee on the gunbarrel instead of Bob Simmons, not to mention that some of the major tunes(4) of the franchise are born from this movie, with this movie marked the first appearance of Desmond Lleweyn as Q, and the odd absence of Eve Moneypenny, whom will return again on Sam Oates's era(5). Directed by Terence Young once more, with Ian Fleming and Richard Maibaum on the screenplay, From Russia With Love is a testament of Broccoli's commitment on making the movie universe as something much different than the original novelverse.

Retelling about the adventures of James Bond on Soviet Russia, following a botched kidnapping of a British diplomat's daughter by SMERSH, whom actually reveals a much bigger plot, where Bond must team up with Tatiana Romanova, a SMERSH agent, undercover American agent Felix Leiter, and a Mexican internationale member Jose Almodovar, following SPECTRE's grand masterplan to stole a "Lektor Device"(6), whom could decide the fate of the cold war. On the other side, Bond must deal with Rosa Klebb, and Donald Grant, the assigned SPECTRE agent, whom is out for Bond, and various other Soviet figures's blood. In the end, Bond's adventure on Moscow are somehow seen as the western world's open arms to the Soviets, with the movie itself somehow seen as a message of peace and coexistence.

(1).Ignore the Connery part.
(2).The UK-US poster split began much more later...
(3).Self-determined quasi-suicide accident, EON productions nearly lost the Amendariz family's lawsuit against them.
(4).The suspense theme, and ironically enough, the OTL On Her Majesty's Secret Service's theme began here.
(5).The era of a lesser gritty Bond.....just wait until Sam Neill crashed in.
(6).Just like OTL movie.

Ian Fleming, during a visit to USSR on early 1964.

This very point itself is where the influence of the franchise began to be remembered as a world-changing event. It was true, that EON productions was taking flaks from right/far right-groups on Europe at that point, for their positive potrayal of the Soviet Union, and alleged "Support" for the United Kingdom to join the Americans on Khruschev's goodwill "thaw" programmes. Yet, it is irreversible, now. With the Soviets now potrayed in a much positive light, with most villains are now potrayed as independent or a member of SPECTRE, with the sole exception of Rutger Hauer's Max Zorin on A View To A Kill, whom initially presented as a Soviet spy, before his involvement on putting Walter Gotell's run as General Gogol, whom returned the image of a "Evil Russian" to the James Bond franchise, ending the franchise's run of avoiding that cliche for a very much-long time.(1) The Thaw itself invited Fleming and EON productions to Russia, where they became the first men who received a award(2) from the Soviet Union, opening a opportunity for a friendship between the United Kingdom, yet, sacrificing Broccoli, Saltzman and Fleming's chances to receive a title of "Sir", due to the accusations they received(3).

Plans for the next movie is laid out, but with Thunderball out from the picture, Broccoli must rethink his plan, and with all of his trust on Fleming, as Broccoli began to think that Saltzman is might be going to be against his plans for the future, and yet, Fleming saw this as a hindrance, with him realizing that he need to return to the books once more.

(1).In a much different way.
(2).Yes, butterflies..
(3).With Fleming receiving the title posthumously.

Alright, since i'm going to be incredibly busy for this week, NO updates for this week.

Rex Harrison, during his appearance as Auric Goldfinger.

Then, Goldfinger was thrown out by Fleming to Brocolli, which Cubby instantly agreed upon, and plans were laid, for the next installment in the fledging series. However, for this time, Broccoli pulled something that might led into the creation of one of the worsts of the franchise, and the worst of Lee's era. Believing that Goldfinger must be released just as fast as possible, Broccoli puts pressure on every departments possible that he could think of. Ranging from the casting crew, to the point where Broccoli's 10-minute decision on accepting Anthony Newley's entry for John Barry's Goldfinger, while in the other very hand, Broccoli's alleged mistreatment on his crew began to get out of hand, with Fleming described Broccoli as a Future Bond Villain, which in the very hand, could lead into Fleming's widely-speculated actual self-sabotage, as a act of revenge to Broccoli(1).

Goldfinger's production was started on June 1964, yet, this was actually not the end of the legacy of From Russia With Love, with few things which is left undiscussed-will decide the fate of the next six movies...

Ian Fleming, photographed during a visit to America

During the short fallout that happened between Fleming and Broccoli, and the overly-rushed production of Goldfinger, Fleming must also deal with the slew of accusations thrown towards him-and inevitably Broccoli in the end, as the right-wing parties and organizations on Britain have claimed before. However, with the attacks and harassment began to disrupt Goldfinger's productions, sales of the books, and the screenings of From Russia With Love, Fleming decided to take legal action against those organizations, hellbent on saving his franchise from the future possible attacks they will launched, as Fleming's "Tolerance" on the Soviet Union that he demonstrated on his books and the first two Bond movies are displayed as a "Propaganda", with Fleming himself at one time on 18th November 1963 got arrested and interrogated by the British police, with the suspected "source" obiviously coming out from those right-wing organizations and parties.

With him sitting in the court, alone, acting as a rogue force due to Broccoli's actual reluctance on joining the short fight, Fleming hoped for the best, with the government actually supporting him-judging from the calls he did with a government official...(1)

Ken Adam's rendition of Fort Knox, for Goldfinger.

Despite being one of the known "worst" Bond movie ever, the money that Broccoli poured for the movie might actually ran into the majestic special effects and interior designs that sets the stage for the future Bond movies, with Goldfinger being the first ones that establishes bars for the future Bond movies. Yet, as the movie are still unfinished at this point, Broccoli can stay calm, as Fleming won the lawsuit case against the right-wing groups that has been harrasing Fleming and Broccoli, granting them safety that they needed.

Needless to say, the storm are looming over them....

The poster for Goldfinger(1), with the German version of the poster lacks the Nazi imagery included.

Despite being a hit, the critics also hits the movie, with Ken Adams's interior design and Christopher Lee's acting not managing to save the movie from the critics and bad reviews that plaguing the movie. The movie, whom strayed rather far from the source story, retells the story of James Bond, whom is tasked to investigate a ex-Nazi fugitive Auric Goldfinger, whom plotting to launch a heist on Fort Knox, intending on flushing the gold-and the Nazi treasure gold kept inside, in order to fund various right-wing/ultranationalist movements, with the mideast on his eyes. Released on 29th September 1964, Goldfinger was a hit, yet also a disaster, with the slew of bad reviews nearly made Broccoli to end the franchise prematurely. However, Fleming managed to convince Broccoli(2), saving the franchise from a early end that Broccoli was hellbent on ending following the dissapointment and shame that floods him following the release. Now, taking time to formulate the next Bond movie, Broccoli puts his trust on Fleming, with Fleming possibly being the next movie's director. Fleming himself knew, that he had to pull something that is smilar to what he have done throughout his career, and that is, by closely staying true to the book(3).
