Cai E Lives Longer

The Chinese Warlord period is one of those parts of history where the timeline is less a line and more an abstract version of what happens when you hastily put your earbuds in your pocket and try to untangle them later.

By all accounts, Cai E was a capable military leader who had the guts and strength to stand up to Yuan Shikai. However, he died in 1916 and couldn't accomplish beyond making sure that Yuan's monarchy didn't succeed.

What could he have done if he lived to, say 1935?

He'd be a significant force to be reckoned with in the southwest, to say the least.

Yunnan would be way better off with Cai E presiding over his generals who would otherwise have fought each other after his passing IOTL (Tang Jiyao vs. Gu Pinzhen and later Tang Jiyao vs. Long Yun). He might even manage to expand into Guizhou and southern Sichuan, which would have knock-on effects come the Constitutional Protection War aka. an absolute clusterfuck between rivaling warlords everywhere.

And that's all I have for you right now. Gotta run, Mothra's coming to get me!.....:p

P.S. His friendship with Jiang Baili (renowned military theorist and former Commadant of Baoding Military Academy) and Zhang Xiaozhun (classmates with Cai and Jiang in IJA Academy, and an able administrator by all accounts) will come in handy, in case you're interested
