Byzantine Blues: A Tale of Rhomania

After a brief civil war over the Despotate of Morea with his brother Demetrios, Thomas Palaiologos proclaims victory after Demetrios surrenders and flees to Naples. The war is a foolish affair, as the Palaiologos family has more to deal with than black sheep. The Ottoman Empire, for all intents and purposes, has destroyed the Eastern Roman Empire.

Thomas, in a humbling move, surrenders fully to the Ottomans; the Despotate becomes a vassal of the Turks. The former heir to the Eastern Roman Empire declares the Despotate to be a successor to the former empire, and in the coming years the Basileia Rhomaion drops the all pretense of Basileia; Rhomania is nothing more than a puppet of the Turks, and the tribute they pay is a great reminder of that. Despite the bad luck, the House of Palaiologos clings on to power - but how long can it last?

So we see an interesting new part of the Roman history.

Could the Palaiologos dynasty build a family empire within two Empires? After all, they have a family member ruling in Montferrat (I think). It could be interesting to see a new Roman period built around rebuilding their empire from within.

Hopefully Palaologoses are very patient. They have wait couple centuries before they can kick Ottomans to ass and reclaim Constantinople.
