Professor Holmes looked out at his class rather large class. The year was still young and he had yet learn the names of even a handful of his students, though he was sure that he would come to know the slackers and the overachievers well.

The elderly professor started in on the lecture of the day “ Now today we will be discussing a man who many would give the tile of the most influential American President, discounting George Washington. Does anyone have any guesses who that man might be?”

Holmes looked out at the crowd of hands and saw a few raise instantly and a number of others rise more slowly. Holmes decided it best to chose a rather intellectual young man near the front.

“Yes you with the glasses.” he said pointing his finger at the twenty-something year old.

“Would it by any chance be President John F. Kennedy?” The young collage student asked?

Holmes felt like telling the kid to get out. He didn’t but he certainly felt like it.

“No”- he said flatly - “While President Kennedy was an influential figure and contributed heavily to the end of segregation in the US, but he was president in a very stable time and had little influence on the international stage.”- he paused for a moment before going on - “No, I was referring to President Theodore Roosevelt.”

Holmes stopped for a moment after a red-head with funny looking curls raised her hand to ask a question.

“Yes?” Holes asked pointing to the girl.

“Professor, I understand that President Roosevelt was an important figure and a very influential man, but what makes him anymore influential then say President Lincoln, or his distant cousin Franklin Roosevelt?”

Holmes smiled slightly. “That my dear is what this lecture will be about. Now is you would all be kind enough to begin taking note, I don’t like to take to walls, I will begin…”

Republican national convention

Elihu Root could not hardly believe his eyes, first Roosevelt had broken the unwritten rule of not appearing on the floor until nominated, which had made several in the Republican establishment upset, but now three days into the convention he was speaking from the floor.

Root heard the unnatural silence that seemed to drown out even the slightest attempts at a whisper as Roosevelt began to speak,. Not as if speaking from his bully pulpit, but with a soothing hypnotic voice that caught the attention of everyone in the convention hall.

It was his famous "Voice in the Crowd" speech that detailed his strong views with such passion and such inspirational qualities that not even Root could deny how impressed he had been by it. It would prove to be the turning point of the convention

Root who had once deserted his old friend Roosevelt for the party establishment could not help but turn around and nominate Roosevelt.

Roosevelt would go on to be nominated by the majority and with the Republican nomination. His first task had been completed, but his next would be to tougher by far. For the Progressive Republican would have to face off against an equally progressive Democrat by the name of Woodrow Wilson.

OCC:I was inspired to write this TL after I read a rather fanciful short story about a Roosevelt victory. i hope mine is more accurate as I have been doing quite a bit of research.

Former President Theodore Roosevelt wins Republican Nomination !

Last night it was confirmed that former President Theodore Roosevelt had
won the Republican nomination and would be running for a third term,
despite the fact that establishment favored President Taft jockeying for the
nomination as well. After his victory had been announced Roosevelt spoke to
the crowd of jubilant Republicans on his hopes for not just party unity but
national unity as well as his hopes for a better tomorrow. Roosevelt of course
spoke of his New Nationalism and his brining back of “Big Stick” diplomacy.

Afterwards Roosevelt could be seen
giddily joking around with several of his fellow Republican politicians…
Though this reporter tried his best to get a hold of President Taft on his way
out of the convention to hear the thoughts of the lame duck president I was
unsuccessful in that venture, as President Taft left the convention as fast as
his legs could carry him… At this point it is still unknown who Roosevelt will
be running against, for the Democratic party seems to be split between Champ
Clark and Woodrow Wilson. Some even describing the Democratic
convention as a wrestling match between the two front runners. A few have
even gone to speculate that there has been widespread influence by special
interests in favor of both canidates, not that your hearing it from this reporter
mind you…. Yet whom ever wins the nomination will go on to face the African hunter, the Trust buster, the war hero, and the much beloved former
president, Theodore Roosevelt.

1912 Democratic Presidential convention

Woodrow Wilson could hardly believe that he had won the Democratic nomination. He had been on the verge of asking the concession speech he had prepared to be read when William Jennings Bryan had defected from the Clark camp and nominated Wilson. After that had happened a great deal of delegates did the same. As Wilson prepared to go out and read his acceptance speech one of his aids, a twenty something young man with dark brown hair, ran up to him.

“Governor Wilson, you grabbed the wrong speech ,sir.” the young gentlemen exclaimed.

Wilson quickly pulled out the speech from his pocket and saw that he had in fact grabbed his concession speech.

His aid handed him the proper speech moment before Wilson heard his queue to enter the stage.

Wilson hastily thanked the young aid and went to the stage.

Wilson Wins Dem Nomination over Clark!

That’s right folks, Woodrow Wilson the Governor of New Jersey has won the
Democratic nomination. After an agonizingly convoluted national convention
the Democratic party finally fell in line behind Governor Wilson, thanks in no
small part to three time Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings
Bryan. With Wilson chosen by the Democrats, Roosevelt by the Republicans,
and as usual Debs chosen by the Socialists the competitors are known, let the
battle begin… Wilson has already stated his platform and the main idea
behind it; ‘New Freedom’. Wilson in his acceptance speech also warned that
his Republican counterpart principle of ‘New Nationalism’ represented
collectivism. He also took time to bash Big Stick diplomacy in favor of what
he calls ‘Moral Diplomacy’...
