Bush/Quayle wins in 1992: What happens to the Democratic Party in the 1990's?

If George H.W. Bush and Dan Quayle won a consecutive fourth Republican term as a presidential ticket in November 1992, and get this: The Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in 1992 as well, what would have happened to the Democratic Party in the 1990's? What would Bill Clinton and Al Gore's future be in the party in the 1990's?

The Dems would have moved further right economically and would have become much more hostile to reproductive rights and gay rights, but they would take power in the 1944 midterms and win a majority in Congress and the White House in 1996 simply because many independent republicans were worried about the increasing influence of the Christian right.

OTL the independent republicans left the party and helped elect Clinton after the "Culture War speech" done by Pat Buchanan in the Republican National Convention, becoming the backbone of the New Democrats.

You'd need a much earlier POD for the GOP to both keep the White House, and win the control of House in 1992. Best case scenario is that Bush wins a very close re election over Bill Clinton and the GOP make gains in the house and senate, but not enough to retake the majority in either chamber . After Bush does that, There's a bit of a debate within the Democratic party as to which ideological direction to go after a 4th loss. Do they go even more centrist, or after the loss of a very moderate Clinton/Gore ticket do they move more to the left and become more populist economically?

The Democrats would make modest gains in congress in the 1994 midterms, and if Tom Foley still loses his seat, Dick Gephardt becomes Speaker of the House.

Clinton's Presidential ambitions are finished after a loss in '92, as I do think White Water and other Scandals in Arkansas would come out eventually. As for Gore, so long as he wasn't the one to cost Clinton the election, he stands a good chance at the nomination and given the fact that the GOP TTL will still have a weak field, the White House in 1996 if the Democrats decide to go in a more moderate direction. I do think it'll be an uphill battle for Gore to get re elected to the Senate in '96 as Tennessee was really starting to go Republican in the 1990s, so it'd probably be best for him to decline another term in the Senate and run for the Presidency.

If the Democrats decide to go in a more liberal direction after 1992, so long as he's re elected, Mario Cuomo would probably be the nominee and get elected President, as like I said the Republican field will still be weak and after 16 years in the White House, many will come to the conclusion that the GOP overstayed its' welcome. If the Democrats barely got 20 years out of Hoover's Presidency, the GOP isn't getting more than 16 out of Carter's.

GOP primary in 96 will be a circus. In 92 you saw the rise of people like Buchanan and his followers who were furious at Bush because he wasn't "conservative enough" however you want to define that.

Four more years of GHWB as the titular head of a party with a seething base that is lurching to the right and you have all of the ingredients for a very ugly battle for the soul of the GOP in 1996.

I think the Democrats would be having the exact same battle in '96 to after a fourth consecutive loss. 1996 TTL would be very, very interesting to see.
