Bush-Cheney 1992

In 1992, George W Bush thought it'd be a good idea to have Dick Cheney replace Dan Quayle as running mate on his father George HW Bush's ticket.

What if George HW Bush had replaced Quayle with Cheney in 1992?

Social Conservatives would be pissed if Quayle was dropped from the ticket, as he was one of them. I don't think it would effect anyone else, so Bill still wins and maybe breaks 400 electoral votes.

It would annoy social conservatives but they'd still mostly vote for Bush anyway--Perot had little appeal to social, as opposed to economic conservatives, and social conservatives hated Clinton. With other voters, it would have very little effect. I am still puzzled that against all the historical evidence, lots of people here seem to think that the choice of a running mate affects large numbers of voters. "Nobody votes for the Veep" http://www.slate.com/articles/news_...minute/2000/06/nobody_votes_for_the_veep.html may be a bit of an oversimplification but it is far closer to the truth. (The running mate can arguably make a difference in a very close election, but 1992 was not close.)
