Bush 92, Richards 96, Who 2000?

Let's say George HW Bush wins in 1992 and Ann Richards wins in 1996.

Who are the nominees in 2000? Richards died in 2006 OTL, and the stress of the presidency might weigh on her health here making a second term unlikely.

Who is Richards's running mate? I think a centrist would be likely (Gore, Bayh, or Gephardt perhaps?)

I think presidents generally get re-elected unless the economy is down, or another specific reason.

So, maybe she does get re-elected, but then faces health issues in '03 or '04.

Unless they are stupendously incompetent, the incumbent President elected in 1996 is absolutely going to be re-elected in 2000 given how good the economy was and the relative peace that existed after the fall of the USSR. Stress could accelerate Richards's cancer, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she'd die in office. At any rate, she'd probably pick a northern VP like John Kerry. If said VP assumes the Presidency in 2003-04, then they probably get elected in 2004.

Richards likely chooses Gephardt, Biden, Kerry, or possibly Bill Bradley as her running mate. She beats Dole rather easily in '96 and is re elected in 2000 (or if health prohibits her from running again, her VP wins) against either Quayle or McCain. She has a down economy in the early years of her second term, the GOP retakes Congress in 2002, if they didn't already in '98 ITTL, I doubt they take it back in a 1994 where Bush is serving a second term. 2004 likely narrowly goes Republican unless they run a dud, if that's the case than Richard's VP is elected President.
