Bush 41 postpones Desert Storm....

Suppose President George H W Bush had backed down on his plan to force Iraq from Kuwait under heavy pressure from the Democrat Congress as well as King Hussein of Jordan and many Hollywood celebrities. Instead he would keep pushing the UN to convince Saddam to leave.

Well one way or another Bush 41 was determined to kick Iraq out of Kuwait.

Would Saddam eventually leave Kuwait? The Democratic Congress as well as most world leaders would soon see the global implications of allowing Iraq to continue occupying Kuwait.

Or would Bush 41 be forced into war at a later date but with much more support behind him?

Saddam would never leave Kuwait on his own. First off he needed Kuwaiti money to help with the massive debt incured by the war with Iran. Secondly if Bush is not pushing as hard to force him from Kuwait, why would he leave? All the troops poured into Saudi are useless if they aren't allowed to move north. Saddam would probably be emboldened by the weak response of the west, believing they would settle for his control of Kuwait once he had agreed to keep the oil flowing.

I don't think Congress would keep Bush from acting. More likely the last minute prospect of a deal being worked out by the Soviets with the Iraqis is more plausible. They get the UN to keep the coliation to hold is fire so the war doesn't start 1-17-91. Iraq probably can by itself another month before F-117s start roming over the country.

Even with a delay the Iraqi military will fair no better than it did in OTL.
