Bulgars Fail to settle/invade the Balkans

It depends on where they go. Should the Byzantines manage to hold them of and they flee westward, they would remain more Turkic (at least for a while) and possibly adopt more Germanic or Italian influence. I still think they would have plenty of Slavic influence.

Would be interesting to see what would happen if they decide to settle in say, the Po valley.

If Constantine IV defeats Asparukh though, the Bulgars would end up settling in the Pannonian Plains (joining Kuber's Bulgars as well).

On the other hand, I had this idea about what if Kotrag (the founder of Volga Bulgaria) leads his Bulgars into the Dnieper River instead of the Volga River, resulting in settling down alongside the East Slavs.

What would the Balkans look today assuming no one else invades successfully?

Of course the Balkans would look differently because of butterfly effect. But in my opinion the difference would not be too great. The Bulgars were a Turkic minority elite ruling over the Slavic majority. In the long run all the Bulgars became Slavic speaking. So I assume that if no one else invades successfully there would be some other Slavic speaking entity in the place of Bulgaria.
