buddhism goes west

yep, it did happen to varying degrees iotl. i recall reading of a mission in rome even.

but, wi buddhism`s spread westwards is as succesful as its spread east? iirc iotl it was the persians that were the problem?

in particular what intruiges me is how buddhism could gel with western religions in the way it did in the eaxt. just imagine that; japanese style shinto-buddhism but with the germanic or roman pantheon instead

It was Ashoka the Great who sent missions to foreign lands for the propagation of Buddhism. The successors of Ashoka were weak and they were not much interested in the spread of Buddhism. With the subsequent disintegration of Mauryan Empire Buddhism lost the strong patronage for the maintenance of its missionary activities.Though there were kings and rulers who supported Buddhism, they were not a replacement for the mighty Mauryan Empire.
The Kushan Empire which arose in the Northwest India, especially during the reign of Kanishka, supported Buddhism. The Kushan emperors helped the spread of Buddhism to the East. But even at this time the West did not seem to have received their attention.
