Title says it all, pretty much. We tend to forget how well he did -- but winning New Hampshire, 20% of the popular primary vote and outlasting the rest of the contenders indicates a campaign that could have been competitive, if things had fallen the right way.

If Dole had decided not to run (maybe if Quayle had jumped into the race), if Forbes had fizzled early (taking some of the anti-Washington support), if he hadn't had such a long list of controversial statements in years past -- Buchanan could have been the Republican nominee. Stranger things have happened, by far.

And from there, how could Buchanan have gotten into the White House? He could be assured of a good slice of the Perot voters, which would make up somewhat for alienated moderates. More importantly, what would a Buchanan presidency mean for America, and for the world? Was there anything behind all the bluster?
