Brokered Convention 2012

2012, like 1996, had a series of weak candidates with an unpopular frontrunner for the GOP. The Dem in both years seemed nearly unbeatable and easily won. Santorum and Gingrich to a lesser extent did well in early primaries. What can be done to make a Brokered Convention happen that year??

The way that the Republican Party awards delegates to their convention is structured to favor the front-runner.
Most of the states award delegates in a Winner Take All manner if a candidate wins the primary no,matter how small the margin, then they get all that state's delegates, or if they are selected by Congressional districts then the candidate wins all the delegates in that district now matter how small the margin is and also they will win all the delegates that are selected by the state wide vote if they win the state vote no matter how small the margin is.He
This is in contrast on how the Democrats award delegates to their convention.
It is by Congressional districts, there is a threshold that a candidate has to reach before they can win a delegate mostly it is set at 15%, this allows candidates that has no shot to win the nomination the availability to stay in the race.
For examples in 2008 Hillary Clinton in March was showed that there was no mathematical way for her to win the nomination but she still stayed in because she was still getting delegates, that was the same thing that Bernie Sanders did in 2012, there was no mathematical way for him to win after March but he still stayed in.
Getting back to the original question, the only way for there to be a brokered convention using the rules in place is that Gingrich and Santorum were better funded and did not go ahead to head with each other competing for the same voters.
Instead they would split the states that they would run in and use the considerable Anti-Romney vote to win enough delegates to prevent a first round victory for Romney.
