I've been doing some reading into the twilight era of Apartheid in South Africa and one concept that caught my eye is that of the Volkstaat. What sort of alternate events would be required to lead to the creation of such a state, and possibly the breakup of South Africa into a series of smaller states? Do you think such a transition would have to be violent or could it be accomplished via negotiations between the de Klerk government and African leaders?

The black opposition leaders didn't want the break-up of their country and neither did the whites (mainely for economic reasons). Therefore it would likely have to be a violent breakup, (i.e. Mandela gets killed shortely before taking power, possibely by a coup.) This would trigger a revolution against the government and thus lead to a race war similar to the Balkan Breakup did.
