Britpop wank.

This thread is somewhat influenced by the "Mods instead of hippies" thread that was here a while ago.

Is there a way to make Britpop way more popular than it was in OTL?

I guess the Americans never got into Britpop any deeper than the big name bands, and even they weren't as popular as second-wave grunge bands, and after grunge's ugly head sank beneath the murky waters, rock/pop as whole started taking second stage to solo singers, manufactured music and hip-hop. To make things worse, "alternate rock" became another word for grunge rip-offs with bad singers trying to make it on the radio.

But what if Americans welcome Britpop as they did the British Music of the 60s, with media billing it as a second British Invasion? Well, I mean Britpop really kicking off a massive renewal of the rock/pop format in the US to the point that hip-hop never gets a chance to fill the role it did in OTL... insane Britpop supremacy, is I am going for here. How can it be done? Kill off grunge, for once, but what else can contribute to a britpop wank?

And what would be the music like today?

Clinton's Funeral procession made its solemn march to his final resting place. He had paid the highest price for criticizing an anti-police rap record when Rapper Notorious Mofo had put a cap in his ass.

Now America showed its grief by public distruction of rap records, tapes and the odd CD (people were less keen to bust these up, since in the 90's they cost an arm and a leg). Bling was seen as an affront to dignity and several innocent kids who just copied the style had got unjust beatings in the name of 'America'.

Young America needed a new direction and they found it in the music and witticisms of Noel and Liam Gallagher.

The impact was so immense, Bush even mimicked the Manc accent in his 2004 acceptance speech describing the US as a "well sound nation".

But wouldn't such a tragedy drive people to appreciate angry protest music (albeit anti-rap) more than feel good pop ?

Not all Britpop was so feel good. A lot of it was quite bitter really.

So in the US grunge was more popular than indie in the 90s? That is...strange.

Man! You obviously not around for the first British Invasion (apart from 1812 of course).

"In the days following Kennedy's death, America was down on itself," said Aquila, the host of National Public Radio's "Rock and Roll America" in the late 1990s. "The nation was shaken by the young president's death.

"Then the Beatles gave young people hope and a reason to smile again," he said. "In the process, the Beatles became cultural heroes who revitalized America's youth culture."

New Wave music was the Second British Invasion - Duran Duran, Culture Club, Spandau Ballet etc al. This would be the third invasion.
